Methodist pastor, district superintendent and bishop successively, he is an admirable exemplar of the maxim that he gives most who gives himself in all his undertakings. As a trustee of seven educational institutions and president of two boards of trustees, as member of the Methodist Commission for Overseas Relief, the board of directors of the Urban League, the YMCA and the National Council of Churches, he has been a steadfast stalwart in the cause of human justice, civil rights and social harmony during the long and difficult years- demonstrating repeatedly the relevance of sound learning and high religion in the struggle for a truly human and humane society. In grateful recognition of his far-visioned leadership and service, we are proud to claim him as an alumnus of this university, with the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa.
